And his face fell immediately as he looked at her with wide eyes. He hated himself - why wasn’t here there for her? Throughout it all, he was the one who was meant to look after her. He promised Jackie all those years ago - and he wasn’t about to break that promise now.

But he already had. 

“W-why?” he managed to stammer eventually. 

“He left.” She answered simply, pathetically. She was ashamed already- embarrassed beyond anything. But there really was nothing else to say, it was the reason, after all. “‘M sorry.”

“What on Earth are you apologising for, you daft thing?” he asked quietly, fondness tainting his voice. “Who am I to judge? If anything…I understand. That was the reason I…did, too. It hurts - I know it does. And you’d do anything to be free from the pain, right?” He smiled softly at her, opening his arms. “And I’ll be there to help you. Every step of the way.”
